   Ash Wednesday (not Thursday, as I miswrote) is the first day of Lent- traditionally a time of fasting and reflection- and it occurs 46 days before Easter.
   This year it coincides with Chinese New Year- the year of Goat in the Chinese Calendar.

   Carnival

   A curiosity:
   Carnival is traditionally held in Catholic areas; as I have just written, in the U.K. today they celebrate Pancake Day ...
   Anyway In London there is a Carnival : NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL , but not in February or March... In 2015 it will be held on 30. And 31. August !

   SHROVE TUESDAY

   Hello,
   Today is Throve Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day because in the U.K. people use to eat pancakes, a rich food before Ash Thursday.
   On Pancake Day ,"pancake races" are held in villages and towns in the U.K. : participants with frying pans race through the streets tossing pancakes into the air and catching them in the pan while running.
   Traditionally, when men want to partecipate, they must dress up as a housewife.
   
   What is a pancake?
   It is a flat cake made of batter and fried in a pan : you can surf the net for the recipe ...
